Nutrient-Dense, Hydrating Soil for Lush, Thriving Houseplants
Our Pre-Fortified Moisture-Retentive Soil isn’t just a growing medium—it’s a carefully balanced, organic blend designed to hold onto water while supporting healthy root development. Ideal for houseplants that prefer consistently moist conditions, this microbial & fungal enriched soil offers excellent hydration, aeration, and nutrition from day one.
Formulated through years of hands-on cultivation and observation, this blend is perfect for plants like peace lilies, calatheas, ferns, spider plants, and fittonias, which thrive in evenly moist environments. It also works beautifully with our full range of organic liquid feeds and soil conditioners.
Key Features 🌿
Organic North American Coconut Coir with ZERO Peat Moss💧
Coconut coir is perfect at holding water while maintaining structure—keeping roots hydrated without becoming waterlogged. We source ours from North America as unfortunately for us, Canada isn’t too good at growing Coconuts for some reason!
Humus-Rich Compost for Steady Nutrient Release 🌱
Packed with aged compost and organic matter high in bio-life with very low toxin levels to support strong, lush foliage and long-term plant vitality.
Added Vermiculite for Even Water Distribution 🪴
Vermiculite enhances the soil’s ability to retain water and distribute it evenly, reducing dry spots and promoting uniform root hydration.
Balanced Drainage to Prevent Root Rot 🌬️
Includes just enough components to prevent compaction and allow gentle airflow—protecting roots from stagnation and rot. We use bark fines as well as Lava Rock to allow more Oxygen into the root zone.
Ideal Conditions & Care for a Moisture-Retentive Soil 🌦️
This organic water-retaining soil is specially formulated to maintain consistent hydration while avoiding the pitfalls of overwatering—but it still requires the right environment and care to help your plants truly thrive. Here’s how to get the most out of it:
Proper Airflow and Ventilation 💨
Even moisture-loving plants need air! To prevent fungal issues and root rot:
-
Make sure your room has gentle air circulation, especially in humid environments.
-
Avoid placing plants in stagnant corners or tightly enclosed terrariums unless they’re specifically suited for that.
A small fan or simply opening a window occasionally can help reduce excess humidity around the root zone and leaf surfaces.
Right Pot Type: Drainage is Key 🪴
-
Always use pots with drainage holes—this soil holds moisture well, but excess water still needs a way out.
-
Avoid decorative pots without drainage unless you use them as outer covers (cachepots) with a grower’s pot inside.
If you’re repotting into ceramic or plastic containers that retain moisture well, go even lighter with watering frequency.
Light & Temperature 🌡️
-
Most plants that love moisture also enjoy indirect light, such as north or east-facing windows, or bright filtered sun.
-
Avoid placing them in hot, direct sunlight which can cause the soil to dry unevenly or stress sensitive roots.
-
Keep temperatures stable, ideally between 65–75°F (18–24°C).
In cooler homes, reduce watering slightly, as water takes longer to evaporate and may linger in the soil longer than your plant needs.
Preventing Root Rot 🛡️
Root rot occurs when oxygen is displaced by standing water, leading to fungal growth and decay. Here’s how to balance moisture retention with root health:
-
Water only when needed: Even with moisture-retentive soil, wait until the top ½–1 inch feels slightly dry before re-watering.
-
Monitor the plant’s response: Yellowing, limp and ‘soggy’ leaves can signal overwatering or poor drainage.
-
Use breathable pots like unglazed terra cotta for extra evaporation if you tend to overwater.
-
Elevate pots slightly using pot feet or a tray with pebbles to allow drainage and airflow beneath the container.
Some Common Plants That Love This Soil 🌿
This soil is ideal for tropical and subtropical plants that thrive in moist, organic-rich environments, especially those with delicate or shallow roots. Examples include:
-
Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum) – Loves consistent moisture and thrives in low to moderate light.
-
Calathea, Maranta (Prayer Plants), and Stromanthe – Appreciate damp conditions and high humidity; known for dramatic foliage.
-
Ferns (Boston Fern, Maidenhair Fern) – Prefer evenly moist soil and indirect light; sensitive to drying out.
-
Spider Plant (Chlorophytum comosum) – Tolerant but happiest in lightly moist soil.
-
Fittonia (Nerve Plant) – Requires consistent moisture and loves humidity; perfect for terrariums.
-
Alocasia & Colocasia (Elephant Ear varieties) – Thrive in moist, rich soils but need proper drainage to avoid rot.
-
Baby’s Tears, Pilea Depressa – Low-growing, moisture-loving ground covers great for terrariums and hanging planters.
How to Use ☀️
-
Fill your pot or planter with Moisture-Retentive Soil.
-
Plant your chosen houseplant directly into the soil.
-
Ideal for water-loving species like Calathea, Boston fern, Maranta, Alocasia, and Peace Lily.
-
-
Water thoroughly after planting to activate the soil’s moisture-holding capacity.
-
Keep the soil consistently damp but not saturated—adjust frequency based on humidity and light conditions.
-
Feed periodically with organic houseplant fertilizer to maintain lush, vibrant growth.
Ensure your plant gets bright, indirect light and good airflow to avoid overwatering stress and keep your indoor jungle thriving.
